BIOGRAPHY
BEYOND is the artistic alias of Roelof Schierbeek (1983), a mural artist whose journey began in 1997 with spray painting. What started as a graffiti adventure gradually evolved into a deep exploration of mural art. Over the years, BEYOND has developed a distinctive artistic language, using it to tell compelling stories that resonate with the public. By walking the fine line between abstraction and realism, his multilayered style has become a signature approach that invites interaction and engagement. His work is known for its dynamic and vibrant energy, creating a bridge between art and the community.
Having painted numerous murals across various countries, BEYOND is grateful to have merged his passion for travel with his artistic practice. For him, art is not just a means of self-expression but a way of life—especially when creating large-scale murals that breathe new life into urban spaces. Each of his paintings tells a unique story; they are never purely decorative but serve as meaningful contributions to their surroundings.
The impact of BEYOND’s murals extends beyond aesthetics. His artwork has the power to transform neighborhoods, infusing gray, monotonous buildings with color and vitality. His creations foster a sense of pride within communities, making public art an accessible and integral part of daily life. Engaging the local community is a key element of his projects—whether through direct participation, educational workshops, or inspiring young talent to pursue artistic expression.
BEYOND’s work has garnered significant recognition. In 2017, he was honored with the Dutch Street Art Award for “Best Dutch Mural.” As the jury stated:
“A big project with several murals. Tactically and perfectly executed telling their own fictive story.
Complete with all kinds of details, shadows, lights and 3D – obvious craftsmanship.”
More recently, one of his 2023 murals was nominated for “Best Mural of the World” by the international street art community “Street Art Cities”.
With an ever-growing portfolio, BEYOND continues to push artistic boundaries, creating murals that captivate, inspire, and connect people across cultures and geographies.
